Oleg Sarumov started coaching youth soccer in Brooklyn in 2009, after a playing career that began at the Neftchi Baku olympic reserve school and took him through the Kazakhstan First Division. Elshan Gambarov joined him in 2010, arriving from a professional career that included the UEFA Champions League, the AFC Champions League and three Azerbaijani league titles.
Since then 2,737 children have trained with us. Today the academy runs 15 teams and more than 500 students between the ages of 2 and 15, with over 10 coaches on staff.
Both owners are still on the field every day — and that is the part that shapes everything below.
Three things we hold to
They are not slogans on a wall — each one shows up in how a session is actually run.
Evaluations and reports, so a parent understands not only what happened at practice, but why it happened — and what comes next.
Groups of 5 to 8 children per coach. The coach knows every child by name and by level — not as a face in a crowd of thirty.
Safe physically — an enclosed complex with a supervising coach on the field. And safe to get it wrong, which is the only way children try anything new.
The same session, whoever leads it
A child's progress should not depend on which coach they happen to get. Three things keep that from being a matter of luck.
The quality of a session does not depend on which coach or which group your child lands in. Boris Kraytman holds the Coach Supervisor role specifically to keep it that way.
A child who isn't afraid to lose the ball is the one who tries the harder pass. We coach the effort, not only the result.
Team training, but the coach knows each player's strengths and weak spots — and what that particular child should be working on this cycle.
Where the academy stands today
The people on the field
Both owners coach here daily, and one person is responsible for nothing but the quality of every session.
Coaching since 2009. Graduate of the Neftchi Baku olympic reserve school and a former Kazakhstan First Division player. Holds a USSF coaching licence.
Coaching since 2010. Former national team player with UEFA and AFC Champions League experience, three-time champion of Azerbaijan and two-time cup winner.
Coaching since 1983. Has developed three national team players and twelve professionals. NYC Cup 2015–2017, IMG Cup 2018, MLS Next NEAL champion 2022. National C licence.
A graduate of the Krasnodar FC academy and a former professional in Russia. Holds a master's in physical education and a doctorate on technique and coordination in youth soccer.
A field that works in every season
We train at MatchPoint NYC — 9000 Bay Parkway, Brooklyn, NY 11214, a roughly 90,000 sq ft sports complex in Bensonhurst with a soccer field, six tennis courts, locker rooms and a cafe, all inside an enclosed and secured site.
- Open air through the summer, under a climate-controlled cover in winter — sessions aren't cancelled because of the weather.
- A waiting area for parents, so you don't have to sit in the car for an hour.
- Sessions are streamed, so you can watch your child train even when you can't be there.
- Free parking at the Caesar's Bay shopping center next door.
The academy is open until 9:00 PM, seven days a week.
One academy from age 2 to 15
A child who starts here at three doesn't have to change clubs to keep going. The whole path lives under one roof.
For players who go further, FA Euro scouts here: our players can move into FA Euro teams and compete in their tournaments. We don't promise anyone a professional career — great players aren't born, they're built. Train regularly and we'll find the talent. One of our coaches, Balint Barabas, played for FA Euro in USL League 2.
Our coaches also run soccer classes at more than 10 daycare centers and schools across Brooklyn — some of them arrange bus rides to our field at MatchPoint.
